  • A Large House North of the Carrer Major

As we have seen at the southern end of the Carrer Major, not all of the houses were narrow and elongated. This one, for example, had a very different structure. It is a house of large dimensions and complexity. To begin with, in the 16th  century, the owner opened a covered alleyway that connected the Carrer Major  and Carrer Nou , the only one of its kind in the entire area. The entrance  to the house was located in this alleyway.  It led to a small  courtyard paved with cobblestones  featuring a geometric pattern. At the far end  of the courtyard was the staircase leading  to the first floor. Beyond this was a series of large rooms. From the documents, we know that the house extended over the covered alleyway and occupied the upper floor of the building located south of it. The house is documented starting from the 16th  century, and in 1565 it was owned by the notary Andreu Roig.

    A Curious Find

In the 18th  century, when the building was already abandoned, a long north-south rectangular structure was built on the west side, following the Carrer Major. We do not know what its function was, although it could have served to plant some trees. A trench was found inside this structure, and inside it, a series of ox and goat horns were found, arranged in an orderly manner and at regular distances. It must be said that its function is one of the mysteries that the Citadel  still conserves.
